LA Troka’s NEW Mobile Interactive Culinary Program Sows Culture and Nutrition in the Community

LOS ANGELES – (November 29, 2017) – LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes (LA Plaza), the nation’s premier Mexican American culture center in Los Angeles, marks the end of this year’s harvest season with the launch of its new initiative – LA Troka ¡Sembrando Cultura y Nutrición!

LA Troka is a mobile teaching garden, made possible by a partnership with the PepsiCo Foundation that will bring LA Plaza’s Edible Teaching Garden and Culinary Arts program to local schools and community centers throughout Los Angeles.

Together, LA Plaza and the PepsiCo Foundation will build upon LA Plaza’s mission by engaging students in local communities to explore the culture and history, production, and nutritional value of fruits and vegetables cultivated and domesticated in the Americas.

LA Troka made its first official stop at Para Los Niños Gratts Primary Center and engaged with a group of neighborhood children. “LA Troka is true to sowing culture and nutrition among our L.A. community,” said John Echeveste, LA Plaza CEO. “Thanks to the PepsiCo Foundation, the multi-sensory-hands-on explorations facilitate student dialogue and empower students to make healthy food choices while inspiring cultural connections in the process.”

The LA Troka mobile unit will be taking health and nutrition education to the streets of Los Angeles starting November 29. The mobile art display, created by Boyle Heights artist Ernesto Yerena Montejano, will carry the necessary tools for student tactile exploration, production, physical, garden and culinary activity as well as nutrition, history and cultural education. The mobile unit will empower student participants to learn about the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables, explore affordable nutrition and practice healthy choices beyond the mobile experience.
